The historic Töölö Library, a modernist architectural landmark designed by Aarne Ervi in 1970, reopened its doors following a meticulous, comprehensive restoration directed by Arkkitehdit Mustonen. As part of this spatial renewal, TUNTO Lighting was tasked to develop bespoke lighting solutions tailored specifically for the library’s extensive silent reading hall.

Seamless Architectural Integration for Töölö Library

The objective was to replace outdated lighting layers with high-performance, minimalist fixtures that complement, rather than disrupt, the historic interior fabric.

We manufactured custom wooden task lighting designed to mount directly onto the reading hall’s long study tables, which the fixtures echo the organic palette and oak-slat accents characteristic of Ervi's interior details. The resulting installation appears so integrated into the furniture geometry that it feels like a native component of the original 1970 layout.

Balancing Heritage Aesthetics with Contemporary Performance

Public library environments place demanding technical requirements on lighting infrastructure, requiring an exact balance between optimal glare control, color rendering, and structural longevity. TUNTO's bespoke wooden fixtures embed premium, highly efficient LED components within a slim profile, delivering precisely directed task lighting that minimizes eye strain for readers while keeping energy consumption low.

"Tunto Design’s fixtures deliver precisely what the architecture originally demanded: highly functional performance that aligns directly with the overarching layout. They seamlessly complement the volume of the space," notes Library Manager Anne Ala-Honkola.

For Arkkitehdit Mustonen, the lighting strategy was critical to honoring the structural narrative. A representative from the firm shared: “The intervention successfully captures the spirit, needs, and history of the building, updating it for modern public use without compromising its mid-century character.”

By bridging traditional Finnish craftsmanship with innovative technical execution, the project secures a well-illuminated future for one of Helsinki's most cherished public interiors.
